Preschool Minister

Tonia Smith

Although I wear many hats, I have always had a heart to work with children.  I have worked with children ranging from birth to high school age for over 25 years.  I especially love working with babies and toddlers.  God has blessed me with being able to connect with them – this is something that I do not take for granted.  I have been the Nursery Director at Southside Baptist Church for 11 years.  I look forward to ministering to these little blessings each week.  Not only do we take care of these children by keeping them safe and clean while parents are in class and church, but we also teach them the Word of God through music, mini-lessons, and field trips….Yes – Field Trips!  We explore outside (with extra volunteer help) and observe God’s creation.  We teach them that “God Made Everything!”  If you have little ones in the nursery, most likely you will hear them say that from time to time.  I believe that it is never too early to begin teaching children about our Heavenly Father.

The book of Philippians is one of my favorite books in the Bible.   In the first book of Philippians verse 6 Paul says this;  “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus”.  Being a Christian doesn’t mean we are perfect.  I believe we are a work in progress and that we should allow Him to continue to mold us each day.  My favorite scripture verse is Philippians 4:13, “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.”  I believe it is important to always remember where our capability comes from.  Remembering this keeps us grounded His Word.  We all have ups and downs throughout our lives…For me, the one constant that has remained since I was 9-years-old has been my salvation in the Lord, Jesus Christ.  When I struggle with doubt and fear, I remember this verse and rebuke the enemy.  From my experience, I have found that this is much easier to do when my daily walk with the Lord is strong.

Now after writing this, I will be singing “He Who Began a Good Work in You”…. Here is my favorite track of this song…  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cm9JqFylmY

Check it out - You will be singing it all day!!
